Is Your Google Business Profile Holding You Back?
Score your Google Business Profile in 60 seconds. Find out what's stopping you from showing up when customers search for you.
1
Profile Basics
These basics determine whether Google even considers showing your business. Look at the "Info" or "Edit profile" section in your Google Business Profile dashboard.
Your business name matches what customers actually search
Your profile name should be your real business name — not keyword-stuffed. Like "Smith Family Dental" — not "Best Dentist Miami Cheap Teeth Cleaning."
Your primary category is specific, not generic
Check under "Edit profile" → "Business category." Like "Personal Injury Attorney" instead of just "Lawyer," or "Japanese Restaurant" instead of just "Restaurant."
You've added secondary categories
You can add up to 9 additional categories. A plumber might add "Water Heater Repair Service" and "Drain Cleaning Service" to appear in more searches.
Your business description is filled out (at least a paragraph)
Check "Edit profile" → "Description." It should be 250+ words describing your services, location, and what makes you different. A blank or one-sentence description hurts visibility.
Your website URL is linked
Under "Contact" in your profile — make sure it links to your real website, not a social media page or a dead link.
A phone number is listed
Use your primary local phone number — it should match the number on your website exactly (Google checks this).
Business hours are set
Check "Hours" in your profile. Include holiday hours too. Google may mark you as "Permanently closed" if hours are missing for too long.
2
Photos & Media
Profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website visits. Check the "Photos" tab in your profile.
You have 10 or more photos uploaded
Go to the "Photos" section and count. Include your storefront, interior, team, and products. Stock photos don't count — Google can detect them.
Cover photo and logo are set
Your logo appears in search results next to your name. The cover photo is the main banner. Both should be high quality — no blurry phone photos.
A new photo was added in the last 60 days
Check the date on your most recent photo. Google favors profiles that are actively updated. A monthly photo upload takes 2 minutes and signals freshness.
Product or service photos are present
Show what you actually sell or do. A bakery should show baked goods. A contractor should show completed projects. These convert browsers into customers.
A video has been uploaded
Even a 30-second walkthrough of your business counts. Videos get significantly more engagement and help your profile stand out in results.
3
Review Signals
Reviews have the biggest impact on whether Google shows your business to searchers. This section carries the most weight. Check your reviews tab in your profile.
You have 10 or more Google reviews
Check your total review count shown on your profile. Under 10 reviews makes it very hard to show up in Google's top 3 map results.
Your star rating is 4.0 or above
Your overall star rating appears right below your business name. Below 4.0, most searchers won't click. Google also filters out low-rated businesses from the top map results.
Your star rating is 4.5 or above
The sweet spot is 4.5-4.8 stars. Businesses in this range get the highest click-through rates. A perfect 5.0 can actually look suspicious.
You respond to more than 50% of your reviews
Scroll through your reviews — how many have an owner response underneath? Count roughly. If less than half have replies, that's a No.
You respond to 90% or more of your reviews
This is a confirmed Google ranking signal. Businesses at 90%+ response rate rank higher with fewer reviews. Renew Local does this automatically — every review, within minutes.
Your last review response was within 48 hours
Check the timestamp on your most recent review vs. its reply. Google measures response speed — 48+ hours is too slow. Renew Local responds in under 5 minutes, 24/7.
4
Activity & Technical
Google rewards profiles that are active, verified, and consistent. This is the last section — you're almost done!
A Google Business Profile post was published within the last 7 days
Check the "Updates" or "Posts" tab. If your last post is more than a week old (or you've never posted), that's a No. Weekly posts signal to Google your business is active.
Your Q&A section has at least one answered question
Search your business on Google and scroll to "Questions & answers." You can (and should) seed your own FAQs: "Do you offer free estimates?" then answer it yourself.
Products or services are listed on your profile
Check for a "Products" or "Services" tab in your profile. Listing your specific services (with prices if applicable) helps you show up in more detailed searches.
Your profile is verified by Google
Look for a blue checkmark or "Verified" label in your profile dashboard. Unverified profiles almost never appear in search results. This is the single most critical item.
Name, address, and phone match your website exactly
Compare your profile listing to your website footer. Even small differences matter — "St." vs "Street", "(555) 123-4567" vs "555-123-4567." Google needs an exact match to trust your info.
